“Our story is rooted both in the vibrant culture of Mexico City’s food, as well as a small kitchen in a West London flat.”
Born in Mexico City, Andrea is an art historian and journalist with a deep passion for culture, heritage, and food.
She earned a degree in Humanities in Barcelona before studying Art History and Archaeology at the Sorbonne in Paris. Her academic journey deepened her appreciation of Mexico’s rich cultural heritage, traditions, and history. Growing up in a home where food was at the heart of family life, surrounded by talented female chefs, further strengthened her love for food as an essential part of that heritage and identity.
The kitchen was not just a place to cook, but a place where stories were shared, recipes were passed down and their heritage was celebrated.
Andrea met Laura while she was on a trip to Mexico and soon after, Andrea moved to the UK so they could live together. As she settled in, she struggled to find good Mexican ingredients, so they decided to bring a piece of Mexico to their new home and make their own recipes from scratch.
Laura’s previous role as Product Director of Mediterranean ingredient company, Belazu, gave her the opportunity to develop multiple prize-winning products beloved by some of the best chefs in the UK.
Her experience in new product development, selling into the food service channel in the UK, and her deep understanding of the food industry meant that their dream of introducing new Mexican ingredients to kitchens across the country could start to become a reality.
After a long journey that began in a small kitchen in West London (our first unofficial headquarters!), Masafina has now grown into its own factory in North Acton, London.
With Andrea’s culinary heritage and Laura’s industry knowledge, Masafina is able to create something unique that reflects the regional flavours of Mexico and is proud to be supplying fresh, sustainable and nutritious ingredients to restaurants across the UK.
